Chimpanzee Trekking in Mahale Mountains
Trek through remote lakeside forest to spend one extraordinary hour with a habituated chimpanzee community in Mahale Mountains National Park.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Mahale Mountains — Overview

The Most Remote and Rewarding Primate Experience in Tanzania

Mahale Mountains National Park occupies a remote peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. It is accessible only by charter flight or boat and receives very few visitors, giving it an atmosphere of complete wilderness. Its primary attraction is a habituated chimpanzee community of approximately 60 to 70 individuals that has been studied by Japanese researchers since 1965.

The Trek to Find the Chimpanzees

Each morning, a team of trackers moves into the forest at first light to locate the chimpanzee community based on the position noted the previous evening and fresh signs including nests, feeding debris, and calls. The trek from camp into the forest takes 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on where the chimps have moved. The terrain is hilly forest with some steep sections. The moment of first contact — when a tracker signals chimps ahead — is electrifying.

The One-Hour Encounter

Visitors are permitted a maximum of one hour with the chimpanzees once they are located. The encounter happens at a minimum distance of 8 meters to reduce disease transmission risk. Habituated chimps continue normal behavior during human presence: feeding in fig trees, grooming each other, chasing through the canopy, and caring for infants. The sound, movement, and facial expressiveness of chimpanzees in their natural habitat is profoundly moving for most visitors.

Mahale Beyond Chimpanzees

The park also supports red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and over 300 bird species. Lake Tanganyika itself offers snorkeling over clear freshwater with endemic cichlid fish, sunset dhow cruises, and kayaking along the forested shoreline.

Getting There

Mahale is reached by charter flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam via Kigoma, followed by a 1 to 2 hour boat transfer to the park. The remoteness is part of the appeal. Most visitors stay in one of two exclusive camps directly on the lakeshore.
