Lake Natron
East Africa's Most Important Flamingo Breeding Ground

Lake Natron — Overview

The Most Spectacular Flamingo Destination in East Africa

Lake Natron is one of the most inhospitable environments in Tanzania  a highly alkaline, caustic lake with water temperatures reaching 60°C and a pH approaching 10.5  and yet it is the primary breeding site for over 75 percent of the world's lesser flamingo population. Up to 2.5 million flamingos gather here during breeding season, turning the lake surface pink.

Ol Doinyo Lengai – The Mountain of God

Rising dramatically above the southern end of the lake, Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano sacred to the Maasai people. It is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which is black when erupted but turns white within hours of exposure to air. Summit treks depart overnight and require serious fitness, rewarded with sunrise views across the Rift Valley.

Engare Sero Footprints

Near the lake's edge, a remarkable set of ancient human footprints preserved in volcanic ash are estimated to be between 5,700 and 19,000 years old. This site is one of the most significant prehistoric human track sites ever discovered, offering a direct physical connection to early East African human activity.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Experience

Lake Natron receives far fewer visitors than the main Northern Circuit parks, giving it an atmosphere of genuine remoteness. The journey there crosses Maasai pastoralist lands and dramatic Rift Valley landscapes, making the drive itself part of the experience.
